A sketch of Perseus, just trying to get a sense of dynamics and capture the essense of how the character would move. Heavily inspired by 300
I need to work on this one a lot more..

Some fleshed out rendering of his weapons and helmet:

And finally my first pic of a ’scene’ ever. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to paint something of this nature. I learnt a heap from it and it challenged me a lot in terms of composition, lighting and rendering. The pic depicts Perseus flying towards a temple of Athena to return the bronze shield he used to kill Medusa. There are things I’m unhappy with in the pic, but it’s a first step in a long journey toward becoming a matte painter.

Finally! Something to show. Sometimes I feel like I’m always telling people I’m drawing yet never have anything to show for it. Here’s the progress on Perseus, the character I’m doing for the 3D modelling comp I’m entering. I know he’s in a boring pose etc. The main purpose of this pic was for me to get all the details that I had sketched up and bring it all together in one nice portfolio piece. Also I’ll use it as reference for when I’m modelling him in 3D. With this one I’m trying to really practice using value/tone. Previously my drawings were trigger happy on the contrast, with 100% black and white everywhere. But in reality light only reaches 100% luminosity (white) or 100% black in extreme lighting conditions. So looking back on my old pics, I see a primary culprit in my cartoony colouring style. Grr.
So this is about 85% done, then I need to go through and colour it.. Then model it, texture it and rig it up. A long road ahead, but at least the planning is done and I know exactly what design I’m going for and won’t have to design on the fly.
In other art related news, I’ve realised that environment and background art will be a good way to get a job. It’ll also compliment my eventual goal to be a matte painter for film. I’ve got some environment sketches lying around here, but have been too lazy to scan in, but it will make an awesome piece. Kind of a mix between oriental and gothic architecture. Can’t wait to crack into it!
Uni starts tomorrow. Ugh.
